Abstract:

All information technology (IT) systems have an architecture that describes the structure of their fundamental components and the relationships between those components. This structure is a critical aspect of systems success. The explicit creation of these architectures is performed by IT architects. The capabilities of these IT architects are therefore crucial to the architectures of these systems. This research investigates what capabilities experienced IT architects say are necessary for being successful in the role.   The findings indicate that technical skills are not the main determinants for success in the role of IT architect, but rather broad experience and other non-technical attributes. This result is important for industry in selecting and developing people for the role of IT architect and for educational institutions in preparing students for this role during their studies.
