Become a Better Supervisor - or "Everything you wanted to know about research supervision but were afraid to ask"

Panel of research supervisors from School of Computer Science and IT

Date and time: 11.30am-12.30pm, Friday 16th September, 2005

Venue: 10.08.04

Chairs: Dr. Michael Winikoff and Dr. Saied Tahaghoghi

Abstract:

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve supervision in the School, and to help research staff accumulate points for supervisor registration, we will have a panel discussion in the School seminar slot on Friday 16th September.

The session will be informal, and the panel will discuss issues raised by research staff.  Possible topics include aspects of research supervision such as how to start off a brand-new student, what is the key to a good proposal (PhD/MBR scope etc.), tracking student progress from meeting to meeting, avoiding getting sidetracked, how much interest to take in a student's personal/financial wellbeing, when is a thesis "ready",...

We're happy to collate anonymous "all you ever wanted to know but were afraid to ask" questions for presentation to the panel;  feel free to send your questions or comments to: Saied Tahaghoghi (saied.at.cs.rmit.edu.au).

The panel might come up with topics of the "all we wanted to say but never found to right forum for it" type too :)
