Note that only remote connections are only permitted to the Unix servers.
PuTTY is a small SSH Client which you can use to login to the RMITCS Unix servers. The Zipfile also comes with help files and extra SSH utilities for file transfer and public key authentication.
WinSCP is a GUI application which makes it easier to tranfer files to and from your RMITCS filespace remotely. It can use the public key authentication provided by Pageant (part of the PuTTY package, above).
XMing is an open source “X Server” which allows you to run graphical Unix programs once you have established an connection (using PuTTY, above).
TightVNC allows you to connect to a graphical X session remotely. Note that you will only need to download the “viewer” component.
You will need to go to the downloads section and choose J2SE and the latest version. Some subjects make use of J2ME (for mobile devices) or J2EE (for webserver integration). The API documentation is a seperate download. Be aware that the Java files are large (approximately 150MB for J2SE and 50MB for the Documentation).
MinGW is a port of the GCC compiler and related tools to Windows. MSys provides a set of native Windows Unix-like utilities which may be required for some make or shell scripts. MSys will not be required to build your own C or C++ programs.
7-Zip is an open source compression application with support for ZIP, TAR, GZip (.gz/.tgz), BZip2 (.tbz/.bz2) and .RAR amongst others.
Firefox is a web browser featuring high XHTML, XML and CSS compatibility. (Note that many RMITCS web pages are written in XHTML, and Microsoft Internet Explorer may not display them correctly or even at all.)
